Children’s Hospital Association Launches Life-Saving Sepsis Resource for Hospitals

The learnings from the Improving Pediatric Sepsis Outcomes (IPSO) collaborative have saved an estimated 570 lives.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) launched a resource — called a change package — created by the Improving Pediatric Sepsis Outcomes (IPSO) collaborative, which brought together data and solutions from 66 hospitals over eight years to improve pediatric sepsis outcomes. Using learning from over 100,000 sepsis cases, the change package equips hospitals of all types with evidence-based strategies to reduce pediatric deaths. Strategies in the IPSO bundle of care have already saved an estimated 570 lives.

“Pediatric sepsis is a leading cause of death in children, but even if a child survives, the repercussions can be severe. Many who live through sepsis develop new chronic medical conditions and face life-changing disabilities like amputation, hearing loss, or cognitive impairment. That’s what makes these strategies from the IPSO collaborative so groundbreaking,” said Torey Mack, chief medical officer at Children’s Hospital Association. “Families trust children’s hospitals to provide the lifesaving care their children need, which makes the consequences of delayed sepsis recognition and treatment so heartbreaking. In partnership with hospitals nationwide, we are setting the curve when it comes to identifying and treating sepsis, so children leave hospitals happy and healthy.”

Sepsis is particularly dangerous to children because their symptoms are harder to identify, and their immune systems are often weaker. There is no test to diagnose sepsis quickly and reliably, and approaches to recognizing sepsis vary widely. Killing 7,000 children in the U.S. every year, it can occur as a result of any type of infection, even one resulting from a playground scrape.

Based on insights from over 100,000 sepsis cases and 2000+ multidisciplinary experts, the IPSO change package improves outcomes for sepsis patients by providing:

  • A lifesaving bundle of care
  • Strategies for effective implementation
  • Key measures for tracking performance
  • 70+ sepsis tools from high-performing hospitals
